Ready for the Day
Waking up with a lazy arm, I smack the top of my alarm clock to stop the slow high pitched beeping. I yawn and head downstairs to the coffee pot where I fill up a mug to enjoy while I read my Bible in the quiet of the morning. An hour later, I go back upstairs for my shower as I do every morning.
Ready for the Life
Walking through church Sunday morning, I’m leading the kids to Sunday school. The toddler cries as I hand him over to the kind people serving in the little kid area. I yell, “Love you!” as I hurry off towards the doors. A couple minutes later, my husband and I go into the auditorium for the sermon as we do every Sunday morning.
Ready for the Day
Taking a shower isn’t the easy process that it used to be like when I’d hop in and out barely washing myself. As the water begins to run, I like to heat up the room, make sure I have a fresh towel and washcloth, and change the showerhead to my preferred setting. Showers are a lot more work than when I was younger.
Ready for the Life
Praying isn’t the easy process that it used to be like when I’d say a quick thanks for the food before meals. As the sermon begins, I remember all my sins from the previous week, ask for forgiveness, dwell in God’s grace, and say thank you for all the ways I’ve been blessed. Prayer is a lot more work than when I was younger.
Ready for the Day
Back in the shower, it’s finally time to wash my hair. My shampoo is in a large bottle with a pump on top. I get it on my hands, suds up, and wash my hair. I take it all in then enjoy the rinse as all the dirt and soap go down the drain. I’m awake and cleaned.
Ready for the Life
Back at church, it’s finally time for the pastor to preach. My Bible is on an app in my phone with almost every version available to me. I get out my phone so I can take notes and follow along in the scriptures. I take it all in feeling convicted to take on the week with God leading the way. I’m wide-eyed and ready.
Ready for the Day
I finish up with lotion and deodorant. The shower isn’t my full getting ready routine, I need these extra things to keep my skin from drying out and my body smelling fresh all day. I get dressed and leave my bathroom.
Ready for the Life
Church finishes up with praise and worship. The sermon isn’t the only part of service, we need this corporate worship to keep us united as Christians and joined in our commitment to Christ. I go get my kids and leave the building.
Ready for the Day
I go down the hall and grab clothes for my kids for the day. I left my phone in the bathroom so I circled back to get it. Wow! That bathroom smells good...how quickly I forgot about the scents in my shampoo, lotion, and deodorant that made me clean.
Ready for the Life
I go on to Monday morning and stick to my usual schedule. I left my good mood in my warm bed so I carried on with my day full of pride, anger, and impatience. I remember my Bible during my lunch break. Wow! That word of God is living and active...how quickly I forgot about the truth in Jesus that made me clean.
Ready for the Day
People will know if I skip a shower because my smell and physical appearance will give it away. I might be able to fake it with dry shampoo or a hat, but a regular cleaning is what I need. Throughout the week, I don’t need a shower every hour, but I do need to wash my hands frequently to keep the germs and bad smells away.
Ready for the Life
People will know if I skip church too much because my attitude and lack of spiritual fruit will give it away. I might be able to fake it with a smile or lame excuse, but a regular confession and Christian community is what I need. Throughout the week, I don’t need to be at church every day, but I do need to spend time in the word and pray to keep my body, mind, heart, and soul focused on God.
Be Ready
James 1:22 “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
