How can I keep my mind on the gospel all day?
My mind gets so full of to-do lists, random conversations, entertainment, family drama, friends, local and global news, meal planning, errands to run, housework, holiday planning, and so much more. The Bible tells us to renew our minds (Romans 12:2), to love the Lord with all our minds (Matthew 22:37), and to think of pure and righteous things (Phillipians 4:8).
When I plan to think about God, I'm more likely to do it. The more I think about God, the more I love Him and all that He has done. The more I love God, the more I want to obey Him and spread the good news. The more I spread the good news, the more other people will come to know, love, and serve God too.
Here are the ways I plan on looking for God throughout my days.
Work
Where is heaven in the result of my work? As I lead children at my daycare, I must remember that their little minds take in everything. My work of serving them meals, teaching them letters, reading them the Bible, and caring for their basic needs can highly impact the foundation of their worldview.
Where is God as I work? Being an hourly servant to God means I ultimately work for Him. My heart and mindset should be focused on Him as I change diapers, wash dishes, discipline, and prepare crafts.
Kids
How does heaven show its face on my kids? I see their joy and innocence as it reflects God's perfect medicine. Their little smiles and the funny way they say things can really make my day.
What has Jesus said about these little children? Jesus wants the children to come to Him, to learn about Him, to know He loves them, and to keep their young faith. The entire gospel is so simple that the kids can understand it and so complex that you can study it forever.
Friends
Are my friends speaking Christ into my life? I listen to my friends and how their lives reflect God in the choices they make. We'll talk about our kids' baseball game or the book we're reading and how God is using those things for His good.
Am I an encouragement to them? This is a great opportunity to build each other up and want glory for God in His use of their gifts. Now is the time to point out how I see God in their lives or the potential of what they can accomplish with Him.
Community
Is heaven on earth with all the pain and suffering? I can look for people acting like Christ during times of pain and suffering. There will be people helping others by bringing food, taking in children, caring for the sick, giving clothing away, and praying for the persecuted.
Who is fighting for truth and justice and love? These are things God is. He is responsible for giving out justice and showing us how to love in a holy way. When I seek truth, I will find Him at the center of it all.
Church
Is my worship a response to God's awesomeness? This time celebrated at church is not about me. I can clearly see the great things God has done and will do. My trust in Him is reasonable because of His faithfulness and ability to keep perfect promises. I give all praise to Him.
What is convicting about the Lord's message through His word? This sharp tool is used by our pastors each week to help me realize God's law and my failure to it. It is when I know my sin more that I appreciate grace more.
Heaven is everywhere when I intentionally look for it. I don't want these moments to pass me by.
Psalm 139:7-8
"Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!"
