We started opening our resurrection eggs last week. There are a dozen eggs, and inside each one is an object to remind our family about what happened with Jesus that first Easter.
Last night, the egg had a rooster inside to teach us about how Peter denied knowing Jesus three times before the rooster crowed twice. Of course, my city kids have no idea what a rooster sounds like except the fake "cock-a-doodle-doo" noise that we always say. We played them the real sound and giggled at their shocked faces.
Yes, little children, roosters are loud and annoying and crow for several minutes in the morning. Think of how Peter was already feeling terrible, and then the rooster keeps egging (hee hee) him on for a while.
Peter wanted to be brave and stand by Jesus' side forever. He immediately fought to try to save Jesus and himself in the garden. He had his sword ready! And used it!
Then Peter watched at a distance when the Jewish trials were happening, and that's when things got real in his mind. He didn't even want to be associated with the man.
Is it easier to fight with weapons than to acknowledge even knowing someone the mob hates?
It's hard to go against the crowd in a spiritual fight.
Jesus did what only a perfect man could do. Jesus did what only God could do.
Jesus felt compassion for those who taunted him. Jesus stayed with those who would betray and deny him. Jesus spoke the truth in pain. Jesus healed when his enemies intended to hurt. Jesus allowed suffering when he was all-powerful. Jesus loved the people who embarrassed and humiliated him. Jesus forgave those who spit on him, beat him, mocked him, and killed him.
My sin is greater and heavier and worse than I can ever know which only makes his love and grace bigger and stronger and more beautiful than I'll ever comprehend. Heaven is amazing because my holy God is there, and I can't wait to be overwhelmed by his glory.
Luke 22:61 "The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”"
