Love in Hate

2-15-2021

“I hate you, Mommy!” he screamed while sitting on the bottom step. “I hate you...Mommy! I hate you, Mommy!” I didn’t think he was going to stop. Sorry, kid, hitting will always land you in timeout. He was extremely upset that he got in trouble and was taking it out on me.

Another child cried and cuddled on my lap, “You’re the best mommy ever,” he said. “Mommy...Mommy, you’re the best mommy ever,” he repeated while squeezing me. Of course, this child felt justice was served. He had been wronged, and his brother got disciplined for it. Now, he was free to rest in my arms trying to feel comforted.

Sitting on the couch was another child, completely ignoring everything going on in the room. She was wrapped up in her own little world. She’s used to the minor fighting that happens between siblings and is focused on herself.

My other child was MIA...maybe up in his room reading a book or building something with cardboard and tape. Either way, I’m sure he was glad to be away from the emotional mess that was happening downstairs.

They’re all my kids whom I love regardless of their current emotions, hateful attitudes and words, ignorance, or immature behavior. I will love them no matter what, but I will not support all of their decisions. In fact, when they make unwise choices, I will guide them in the other direction with love. This is how I train them in the way they should go.

My love for these individuals is unconditional yet still imperfect. Sometimes, I’m not the best parent. I might not judge every dispute fairly, or I’ll get impatient with them when they’re acting crazy. My humanity shows as I fail to be a flawless parent. None of us are.

The only perfect parent is found in our Father God.

How much better is God’s justice?! How much better is God’s discipline?! How much better is God’s comfort?! How much better is God’s love?!

God’s love is beyond what human minds can fathom. God is love. This is one of the reasons he deserves our worship. I see His love when mine fails. I see His justice when mine doesn’t fit. I see His comfort when mine isn’t enough.

At the end of the day, I tuck each child into bed. I tell them that I love them, then I pray for God’s love to cover them. My love for them is strong, but God’s love is greater.

1 John 4:8 “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love."
